Software - VMWare-module error.

Titel: VMWare-module error.
Hi,
I am attempting to install VmWare Desktop 5 onto my computer. I ran installation, said no to the configure thing, and got and ran the newest any-any update. However, now when I go to configure, the following shows up at the end:
Code:
Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.14-kanotix-9'
cp -f vmnet.ko ./../vmnet.o
make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-config1/vmnet-only'
Unable to make a vmnet module that can be loaded in the running kernel:
insmod: error inserting '/tmp/vmware-config1/vmnet.o': -1 File exists
There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the
set of C header files you specified and your running kernel. You may want to
rebuild a kernel based on that directory, or specify another directory.
For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please
visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html" and
"http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/prebuilt_modules_linux.html".
Execution aborted.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi marinebro0306,
apparently you're running Kanotix-2005-04. If I remember it correctly, you don't need the any-any patch for it. If you have at least 512 MB of RAM, you can also test VMware without messing up your hd install: Boot Kanotix off the cd (or even better, off the iso file on your hard drive with "fromiso" cheat code) and enable unionfs:
Code:
su
fix-unionfs
You can now install and test VMware Workstation by downloading one of the smaller virtual machines VMware offers for testing purposes.
Good luck!

Right now, I'm running the HD install version. I tried it without the patch, and once with it. Both yielded the same results...
If I download the newest version (easter), is there an option to wipe the drive? I don't remember if I could during install.
Also, will Easter work with VmWare?
Thanks!

Is this VMWare Workstation or VMware Server? I had no problems with VMware Workstation 5.5 and Kanotix 2005-04.

VMware Workstation 5.5 and Kanotix 2005-04 is running here on a daily upgraded box. You need to run the any-any-patch, before you do /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl. You get the patch here:
ftp://platan.vc.cvut.cz/pub/vmware/
The newest is:
ftp://platan.vc.cvut.cz/pub/vmware/vmwa ... 104.tar.gz
Hope it helps,
hubi

OK I updated to the easter vesion, ran apt-get update, and installed VMWare. I said no to the config thing, and ran the any-any update and said yes. I went through it and everything appeared to go smoothly. It said that it was configured properly. Now I go to run ./vmware, and it says:
Code:
root@KanotixBox:/home/Jeff/Programs/VmWare/5.5.2_29772/vmware-distrib/bin# ./vmware
vmware is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured
for this system. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command:
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl.
I just want to clarify that to start it I DO do ./vmware, right? Also, what do I have to do now? The easter was a 100% fresh install, not update. Wiped the drive and everything...
Thanks!

Its ok now I got it to work. Here's the fix, for anyone who needs it:
1. Go to etc/vmware and delete the file not_configured (need to be root, and must do it through console)
2. If you do 'vmware' now, it will give another error about connecting.
3. Type 'exit' in the command line, and do 'vmware &' again and it will work.

that sounds like my vmware install, stop, start, get rid of this file, start, run any any, then suddenly it worked.
