Software - Edit apt sources list to reflect location?

Would it be okay to edit sources list to reflect your physical location? Or would that cause a problem?

For instance if the user physical location is US, would it make any sense to change: ftp.de.debian.org to ftp.debian.org in the sources list?

Thanks.

Seems the sensible thing, and debian encourages this. There is ftp.us.debian.org as well if I am not mistaken.

Rather ftp.us.debian.org

If you'd like to really find the best servers you could try netselect-apt or apt-spy. I prefer netselect-apt and of course it is apt-getable. Winken Either tool can benchmark apt mirrors for you.

you can use h2's script to easily switch the mirrors.

If I remember right calling the script with the option -m was for switching mirrors.

Thanks mz for another helpfull tip.

(The fastest one netselect-apt found was one that didn't have sources, so I decided to boycott them)

apt-get install apt-spy
apt-spy -d testing -a north-america -e 3

For newish users, I would suggest making sure that you copy your /etc/apt/sources.list file to somewhere before running apt-spy. It may not find many repos that work, at least in a reasonable time, and most certainly won't reproduce all the "specialized" repos that you may have in your sources.list file. Especially if you've customized the file, make a backup. Apt-spy might blank the thing!
