Hello, I have a dual boot Kanotix/winXP Toshiba notebook. To backup my Kanotix / (hda8) /home (hda9) and a fat32 partition (hda5), to a USB drive, I use rdiff-backup . Would it be possible to use rdiff-backup for the XP partition on hda1 or is this a really bad idea. I have tried Mondoarchive but end up with .....Fatal error, ntfsclone missing and mondo aborts.

Thanks
Laurie

linux can't really write safely to ntfs. NTFS-3G on kanotix helps a bit, and is more trustworthy than captive was, but personally I wouldn't really trust that stuff.

You might also be able to simply copy the xp partition with gparted, which comes with kanotix, to the usb drive.

XP professsional comes with a native backup utility, in programs->applications->system tools, backup.

xp home has this on the cdrom but it doesn't get installed unless you do it yourself, it's in tools or something.

You could use partimage to clone the xp install, then use rdiff-backup for the linux partition

Another option maybe to use Gparted 0.3.xx as it can copy ntfs partitions now

Howver its at your risk, PLEASE read the documentaion carefully

Thanks h2 and bluewater, I will take a look at Gparted. During much googleing I found these links, which may be of interest:
