General Support - XDM and KDM gone after DU today bluevobler - 31.10.2006, 23:49 Uhr Titel: XDM and KDM gone after DU today
After DU today I found myself in quite a pridicament.
Booting stalls at :
"INIT: Entering runlevel: 5
Starting systerm log deamon
Starting kernel deamon".
I can only boot into level 1. No level 3 or 5.
Here is the list of errors I found.
Kernel BUG at mm/slab.c 608!
/var/run/kdm.pid not found
/var/run/xdm.pid not found
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Don't remember much about being in level 1. If you are root,
try the following:
# apt-get reinstall kdm xdm
but if not root or it doesn't work,
then wait for more intelligent assistence
or
do it the Easy Windows way:
Boot from the 2006-01-RC4 (recommended) LiveCD and reinstall.
(or at minimum the 2005-04 release)
Follow it's directions and do the dist-upgrade from there.
Hope that helps,
Richard.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your suggestion. I did manage to reinstall xdm and kdm from level 1. This however resulted in a complete system crush.
I followed that with dist-upgrade and apt-get -f install which removed tons of packages, but enabled me to get into level 3 where I could follow with h2 du fixes and this did the trick. I back in Kanotix.
