          | A new RAW image conversion tool is out for Linux. Raw Therapee

 A nice review

I've not yet really had a chance to test this apps abilities. According to the review it still has some shortcomings. Well we'll see what happens as it matures.

          | Sounds interesting to me too. Hope that there will be a way to get in running.
If not, what alternatives do you people use to convert your raw's? I tried Rawstudio, but it seems to have a problem with my Canon 350D CR2 Files...

          | In order of preference (for Nikon D70) :
Lightzone in Linux - look up in forum for a link.

 Rawshooters Essentials under wine.

 UFraw plugin for gimp

Looking at the article, Bibble and Adobe look 'better' but are expensive....

          | cool, sounds like a lot of choices. I bought Rawshooter a while ago. I think I will try it with wine and then test the other choices. Thanks a lot! |

          | I only managed to get the free version of Rawshooters to work with the beta version of Crossover Office. I got errors with bith 2005 and 2006 with wine. (although 2005 worked with an early version of wine)

Do you have tried the Windows stuff which comes with the camera from Nikon?

I just was too lazy yet to install those progs through wine or crossoveroffics resp. in my w2k vmware-installation, and I am quite happy with ufraw and dcraw (incl. plugins for gimp and digikam), but my skills as photographer are very basic anyway

bibble does the best job for me.... its kinda expensive but a lot less so than a decent lens! If you change the lens that came with the D70 its going to cost you anywhere from this up... (and I mean up....)
I hate using non OS SW but it just does a far better job .. after bibble then the nikon stuff or photoshop are both OK... after that comes 8 bit support only (like GiMP) at which point you mightest well sell the D70 and buy a point n shoot ... (well not really but not using 16 bit color space is like shooting in jpeg to start off you loose over 90% of the data)
I gave bibblepro a trial and reluctantly parted with the money,,,, but to be honest it was a very good buy.... it almost costs that for a Nikon strap
  or lens cloth... |

          | Gowator,
thanks for the explanations. Well, lenses are not cheap, if you go for quality. So I'll give the Nikon stuff a try, I usually keep the raw originals anyway (I do not shoot jpegs, memory cards are now big enough).

Nikon Capture gets very good reviews but costs £100 in the UK. You can have a trial with the Nikon bundle to see what you think. Lightzone and Rawshooter are much better than the gimp plugin. Lightzone is a Linux package, a bit strange to use but I get excellent results with it. Rawshooter is a close second and very easy to use. I'll probably try BibblePro one day . . .
