I use a BT Voyager 105 usb adsl modem with the eciadsl driver.

Whenever I use a kanotix kernel it causes the modem to crash after a short while.

By crash, I mean all the lights light up and it completely locks up and I can no longer access the internet. I am unable to disconnect the modem using eciadsl-stop and I have to unplug the modem.

When I try to reconnect after this it usually takes a few tries before it connects again and often not at all until I reboot.

I have experienced this with every kanotix kernel I've tried over 3 different kanotix versions.

I never have this problem with debian sid kernels or kernels in other distros (except a kernel I used in suse 10.0).

I really want to be able to use kanotix kernels for reasons mentioned in another post (titled spca5xx webcam module).

I generally download the latest eciadsl driver from the flashtux website and compile it but I have also tried downloading the .deb debian package, also from flashtux and the one from the sid repos but the problem is the same.

I've also tried using older versions of the driver.

From what I understand, kanotix comes with the eciadsl driver built in but I have never managed to get it to work so I always end up removing it and using the flashtux one. |

Did you ever try an xxx-kanotix-up-y kernel? sometimes multithreading disturbs modem-drivers.

I can't say that I have. I see a kanotix-up kernel under "Stable Kernels" at the left of this forum but after browsing the forums and wiki I can't find any info on it. Could you explain what an "up" kernel is and what the difference is between that and a regular kernel please?

<EDIT>

I found some info, up means single processor right? (uni-processor?).

Well I'll give that a try. Before I do, another question.

Before your first reply I installed kanotix-update-gui, I've noticed this lists an "up" kernel after searching for newer kernels. Will this completely automate the whole process of upgrading or installing a different kanotix kernel without needing to do anything else? |

 Zitat:

I prefer the wiki-method:

wget -c http://.........kernel.zip

unzip....etc

but yes, probably the update-gui automates this.

Greetings

          | Well before your last reply I went ahead and tried anyway. It did indeed automate the whole process and the kernel is up and running and working. I haven't had time to try out my modem yet to see if it solves the eciadsl problem but I'll report back when I do. |

Well so far, using the "up" kernel (2.6.16.16-kanotix-up-1) my modem hasn't crashed at all.

However, it has been disconnecting very frequently (about every 15-20 minutes). This may be something to do with my isp though as they are making some long long-term changes. |
