At JavaOne, I dirst became aware of Nexenta (http://www.gnusolaris.org/gswiki) based on OpenSolaris. I was skeptical at first, but I thought Sun's Java Desktop blended really nicely with gnome.

At the booth, I picked up the LiveCD and the install CD to give them a try on my Dell c640 (laptop). No dice.... No pre-configured grub options worked:( When I got home I tried the liveCD on my dell gx620. No dice.... I tried on vmware on my dell 4600.... No dice..... I haven't tried on my dell gx280, but I don't have much confidence.

Let me just say that I run Kanotix on my dell gx620 and I have a Mac g5 OS X. Kanotix is evey bit as reliable as OS X.

Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into it. I just works.

-Bryan

The incompatibilty of Nexenta's CDs sounds pretty familiar to me (note, Solaris has worse h/w support than linux, but SUN Solaris and other OpenSolaris spin offs like Schillix work on my h/w and in qemu in contrast to Nexenta), but where it gets ridiculous is how they prepare their base system - by using alien (bye bye upgrade hopes)...

Additionally Nexenta still faces quite serious legal trouble by linking GPLed (debian-) software against SUN's cddl licensed libc, which is at least pretty problematic.

Quintessence: Nexenta, come back when you're actually able to compile your own OpenSolaris kernel and debootstrap your base system from your own code base, what use is a shiny X.org/ Gnome storefront when the base system is in no consistent/ properly packaged shape?

Disclaimer: I really like Solaris (using it since 2.5(.0) on (mostly) SPARC h/w) and would really appreciate a Solaris with proper (dpkg or rpm) package management, as sysv pkgadd shows its age, but I can't take Nexenta seriously yet. In my opionion it is a pity that SUN didn't release OpenSolaris under a GPL2 compatible license, so that sources and ideas could flow between the projects; both system would have won.

I'll at least wait for a non-Alpha release before I try again;) I think it has good promise.

Wahoo...
I can run it on my gx280. Are there any problems setting up a dual boot with Windows XP? I'm already dual booting Kanotix with it on that box.
If I can dual boot it instead, but don't worry Kanotix folks, my primary development box is Kanotix on a 64 bit box (which Nexenta won't boot).

Getting Solaris and Linux to behave on the same hdd requires some efforts (Solaris and linux claim 0x82 as partion)., but it is possible.

My idea is to remove the Kanotix partition and dual boot Solaris/XP while leaving Kanotix on my 64 bit production/development box.

So I can't find the option on the Nexenta Install. It wants to reformat the whole drive. Is there a way just to reformat/install on the Linux partition?
