Let me end by offering two Linux distributions I would recommend. If you are interested in a commercial version, my pick is SUSE Enterprise Desktop, which should be out shortly after you read this. If you want a community-based distro, try Debian Kanotix. But you will probably want to explore some on your own. Distro Watch is a great place to start. Good luck!

Interesting read. My experiences are similar to his, and I am a desktop user too, but no professional in IT. Unless him I had my w2k, and I really never liked XP, and switched to Linux dual-booting about 30 months ago, but w2k still runs in a vmware environment (with lovely samba-shares to exchange data), but I more or less only use it buying music from the itunes musicstore and burning the music to free it. All the rest is Linux only, and after two years of mainly Fedora and a bit SuSE resp. K/Ubuntu, I came across Kanotix and loved it.

Greetings
