Many thanks for that heads-up. I've been struggling with the old Skype 1.2 without any success and had just about given up! The new Beta 1.3 works really well - after a bit of juggling with Alsamixer to adjust the microphone output. Wonder when Skype Linux Video will appear?
Another VOIP-type service has appeared recently www.jajah.com. Looks a bit of a hybrid system, but might be worth investigating.
