          | This may seem crazy but would it be possible to build a VERY barebones minimal version of KANOTIX? I know there are minimal distros out there but this would be a learning experience too. I told my boss we could be using LINUX based computers instead of Windows based. It would be easy because we use just 2 web based programs!!!! So all I would need is a tiny distro with just a BROWSER and some tools. I tried using the web based programs on my own laptop on the network and they run fine using Kanotix.
Does anyone know of a way to do this via some instructions? Or is it better left for more experience users? I know I could use puppy, dsl, feather linux, etc.....but I like Kanotix and it would be fun to try to build a small version. If I can do it.

          | Take a look at CPX-Mini: http://debian.tu-bs.de/project/cpx-mini/
From what I hear, the next release of Kanotix will include an option to install a slimmed down system without KDE.

If you want to experiment with the current release, follow Kano's advice in this thread: Create a "kicklist", a text file listing the names of the packages that you want to be removed, and run Kano's commands before installing to hd. The command from my post will create a list of all packages on the LiveCD sorted by file size. You can take it as a starting point for your kicklist.

          | It uses fluxbox rather than kde. Otherwise it is debian based although it is a little behind 2006-01. There isn't any indication whether there will be a newer version.

          | I have installed CPX and I am now booting with lang=us since "everything" seems to default to "de" but I cannot figure out how to "keep" my keyboard settings "us". I am not using KDE but Xfce4 and I cannot "see" the option to change and set my keyboard to "us". I have used kbdconfig but it is only for that time and when I reboot it's back to "de"??? |
