I tried this and got a warning. gtk warning: can't open display. I use a nvidia geforce 4 Ti 4200 gfx card. I used apt to get beryl and libxcomposite1 after adding kanotixguide.org to my sources.list (http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-21184.html). Suggestions appreciated.

Here's what worked for me: Enter init 3 before installing the Nvidia driver, then init 5 to return to KDE. Launch Konsole and type - as user - beryl-manager

I did the init 3 before installing driver, and when finished, it dumps back to gui and kde log on. I'll try to run beryl-manager once I log in. Thanks again, ockham Smilie

edit: spelling

After that, KDE don't work right and I have to restart it...

Then I ceated a new user and logged in. Here beryl starts well. Do you know, what I've to change so I can use beryl with my origine user...

PS:
Do you plan to integrate beryl with aixgl as default in final kanotix 2006?
It's the best I ever saw, next to E17 Winken

tach!

Just tried creating new user in kde and yes- beryl-aiglx works well all of a sudden. I too would love to know what setting to change in my original user to enable this- as it always gave similiar error as arohrmann. Boing, Boing wobble wobble.

anyone an idea, how to get the emerald-themes work?
i installed emerald and emerald-themes and the menu opens after klicking the trayicon.. there are also several entries with previews for each theme - but selecting has no effect!

do i still have to do something else to change the emerald-(beryl)-theme?
thanks..

Suppose you use the Beryl windowmanager. It should work then. Does here on two boxes (both with nvidia cards). Otherwise no ideas, because it just works here.

oops Winken sure, i use beryl. my machine has an nvidia-card, too. k is a fresh install.
so you didn't do anything more than installing beryl, adding emerald - and by selecting a theme in the menu it changes instantly? when i checked kanos compiz-script, there it was just like that, but here with beryl nothing happens... Traurig

Yes, just that.

Well, I did not use the script, I used the method Kano describes in the second post here in this thread. And it works with an old graphics card and a newer one. No changes made, newest kde 3.5.5-1 (but worked with all versions of 3.5.5).

Hi wegface.

I test something and if you remove (rename) your /home/xxx/.kde folder, then beryl works fine.
Problem is, you have to reconfigurate your KDE...

If someone knows, which file in folder ~/.kde/ don't want beryl to start - please tell us here...

I did find it was i had destop icons swiched off. Turned them back on in kcontrol AND restarted x/kde and then beryl plays nice. I'm sure someone did mention this a while back but i didnt restart kde or x to confirm this worked. This obviously may not be your problem but worth a try.
