Or any usable Linux?
I might buy it, it's a laptop, but it's got Spanish Windows 98 on it... think I prefer Kanotix to that somehow!

I dare say it would run but it'd be like a rug on Valium.
For a machine like that I'd suggest something along the lines of Damn Small Linux. |

damn small linux will do, maybe cpx-mini might do as well. and a few others.

Yeah, RAM is probably the most important lack of your system. To start KDE you will need at least 128 MB, else you will get an error message and fall into TWM.
I would recommend to get Damn Small Linux |

| It's just I'm thinking of buying it... Maybe it's not worth it... It's selling for £30, and we need another computer really... I might wait till next year, me and my fiancée will be getting laptops free with work, probably marginally better! |

| £30 would be ~ $57USD. With those specs, if it were a desktop, they should be giving it away for free. But since it's a laptop, it sounds worth it, especially if it's in good shape. Like piper said, you need more RAM. Wonder if a) the laptop will let you add (or swap out) memory sticks and b) whether you can still buy any for it. |

| My gateway pc is better than that and it was found on the side of the road on hard rubbish day. He should be paying you to take it away, by the time you feed ram (if you can find any) into it you could have found a better one cheaper. |
