ok so I tried the Live CD and I managed to get saudio files to play and also video files to play . So I installed top a hard drive and now I have no sound at all . I have graphics in Kaffeine and Amarokk . Also in M Player when I try to play clips from the internet through Iceweasel . However I have no sound at all . This must be a software glitch as I have sound when running the Live CD .
Any ideas folks ?

Happens when you have USB cam or so connected on bootup, you can unload those drivers using
su
alsaconf

Hi . I have no cams or usb bits connected . Only the usb external hard drive .
Still I did as you suggested and now the sound works fine in Kaffeine and Amrock . Have not had a chance to try through FF for internet clips .
I have found it seems to have disrupted something as it is very difficult to turn the pc of now , I have to use a command line prompt . Could it be something to do with , see pic . I clicked YES at this prompt but did not do any configuring .
Also have posted a walkthrough with pics that folk may find useful .
