Multi-boot linux and window on core 2 duo 3.0 ghz with 2 gb ram.

Just today installed Kanotix 2007 rc7. Looks great as I look around. Just checking to see what works.

Tried to play a video from you tube. Got a message that I needed flash. Saw a post about opening a terminal as root and typing apt-get update, apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree.

I tried that but there were errors that I have listed below:

Code:
Err http://security.debian.org etch/updates Release.gpg

Could not connect to security.debian.org:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out

Err http://ftp.de.debian.org etch Release.gpg

Could not connect to ftp.de.debian.org:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out

Err http://acritox.de ./ Release.gpg

Could not connect to acritox.de:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out

Failed to fetch http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/Release.gpg  Could not connect to ftp.de.debian.org:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out

Failed to fetch http://security.debian.org/dists/etch/updates/Release.gpg  Could not connect to security.debian.org:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out

Failed to fetch http://acritox.de/debian/./Release.gpg  Could not connect to acritox.de:80 (1.0.0.0), connection timed out

Failed to fetch http://kanotix.com/files/thorhammer/./Packages.gz  404 Not Found

Failed to fetch http://kanotix.com/files/thorhammer/./Sources.gz  404 Not Found

I also got a lot of these:

Code:
W: Couldn't stat source package list http://ftp.de.debian.org etch/main Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.de.debian.org_debian_dists_etch_main_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

W: Couldn't stat source package list http://ftp.de.debian.org etch/contrib Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.de.debian.org_debian_dists_etch_contrib_binary-i386_Packages) - stat (2 No such file or directory)

Finally I got this:

Code:
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Then I tried to play a music cd with amorak. It played but no sound came out. It showed the volume was at 80%. Tried 100% but no change.

Can someone point me in the right direction to solve these two problems?

Thanks,

Harold |

Actually apt-get update doesn't work. It tries to connect to 'ftp.de.debian.org' but never does. I get the following errors:

Any ideas about why update doesn't work? I am running it as root. Should I re-install the distro? |

Well then you most likely don't use a proxy server, then you can try just a different DNS server in /etc/resolv.conf - add this for testing:

I am at work and away from my personal computer. It will be later today before I get back there.

It looks like you are saying to add "nameserver 130.149.4.20" to the end of the /etc/resolv.conf file. Is this correct? |

I added the above to the end of /etc/resolv.conf and update seemed to work. After that was thru then I did the 'apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree' and I got a message that the latest flash file was already installed.

I haven't had time to yet to see if videos will play or not. Will post back the results when I get the time to try.

I noticed two other entries in the /etc/resolv.conf file. Should I delete those entries?

I tried to play a video at you tube and got the same message as before: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player."

Oh, and this was after I re-booted. |
