/etc/init.d/kdm stop

or start is the direct way. I also changed the runlevels, that

init 2

up to init 4 disables X and

init 5

starts it. You dont have to do that when you use my nvidia or fglrx script. These scripts do that automatically.

Kano,

Thank you very much for the instructions concerning the X server.

My computers use M2a_vm boards with ati Radeon X1250 graphics. You gave instructions for using the fglrx script on Apr 24, 2008. The first two installs used the 8.4 drivers and the installs were perfect.

Two or three days ago, a third install was tried. The script seem to run normally until the restart of the X server. The screen went black and the system hung. For the last install the ati driver version was 8.512 and the /etc/ati directory which contains the configuration files is missing.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this? Is there a way to force the fglrx to install the 8.4 drivers rather than the 8.5?

You have to use -v 8-5 for 2.6.26.

Kano,

I did a dist-upgrade on system, now my kernal version is 2.6.24-3. The fglrx script was reinstalled and the result was the same - black screen and the system hung. How do I upgrade the kernel to 2.6.26?

Or is their an older version of the script available that will load driver version 8.4?

Or are their instructions for manually loading 8.4 driver on rc7?

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Jerry
