Hi,

I just realized that my hard disk install of Kanotix 2005-4 does not include the anacron package. Apt-cache show anacron tells us:

Description: a cron-like program that doesn't go by time
Anacron (like `anac(h)ronistic') is a periodic command scheduler. It
executes commands at intervals specified in days. Unlike cron, it
does not assume that the system is running continuously. It can
therefore be used to control the execution of daily, weekly and
monthly jobs (or anything with a period of n days), on systems that
don't run 24 hours a day. When installed and configured properly,
Anacron will make sure that the commands are run at the specified
intervals as closely as machine-uptime permits.
.
This package is pre-configured to execute the daily jobs of the Debian
system. You should install this program if your system isn't powered on
24 hours a day to make sure the maintenance jobs of other Debian packages
are executed each day.

Since I do not always keep my computer on (I switch it off every night) should I install anacron or is there another package in Kanotix which does a similar job? Does the hard drive of Kanotix assume that the computer will not be powered down?

Most importantly - are there system maintenance task in Kanotix which assume that the compter is always running and rely on cron to get maintenance jobs done? If I do not install anacron and if I power down my computer on a daily basis do I put my computer's stability at risk?

Thanks,

VS

If you like anacron, install it - it's just not suited for the CD itself, as it would run each time the CD is started (because the time stamps used for anacron are on CD and therefore back in the past).

its not that I like anacron - its that I have a *hard disk* install of Kanotix and that I wonder if I not installing it will result in any problems. in other words - does the Kanotix hard disk install assume the computer will remain on and cron will handle all maintenance jobs?
