My wholehearted apologies if this post is in the wrong place. I have spent two days trying to work out this problem and i seem to be running in circles. Here's what happens.
I installed Kanotix on a hdd. I chose Kanotix because it will work on older computers. At first, everything works fine.Then I do the apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Then I add packages such as openoffice, kdeedu and kdegames. Everything still works fine. I shut down and restart. Suddenly, every program that attempts to use KDESU gives me an incorrect password error. The password is accepted in the Konsole shell. I have followed the suggestions to use passwd to assign a new password and sudo passwd root and disable kwallet. Nothing seems to be working. One thing I definitely can not do is to modify the sources list as the user somehow loses write access.
What I am doing is setting up computers for introduction to new linux users. The process needs to be clean, simple and foolproof. Definitely not Konsole shell material. But they seem to lose the rights to make even the simplest of changes. The more time I spend troubleshooting, the less time i have to study and promote linux.
Here's the odd part. I got this same problem on two computers. I reloaded both computers twice. Same results every time. However, two other computers I set up last week do not have this problem. I am afraid to do anything to them. In effect, this projetc is doomed.
One thing I noticed is that the latest installs include a program called secpolicy. Does this have anything to do with it?

just do another dist-upgrade and things will be fine.
this error ocurred with only a few packages of kde 3.5.5 being in the dist-upgrade you made, and was fixed with the next packages that came in and that you are obviously lacking.
